Once the offseason officially begin, teams will no longer be able to have players on the 60-day injured list. For the SF Giants, that means they will need to activate Keaton Winn, Tom Murphy, Wilmer Flores, and Jung Hoo Lee.
4 players the SF Giants will need to activate from the 60-day injured list
In terms of the order of operations, players will elect free agency following the end of the World Series. The option decisions and deadline to bring players back from the 60-day injured list happen within the first week.
The 40-man roster is currently full. However, they have three unrestricted free agents in Michael Conforto, Mark Canha, and Curt Casali. Of course, Blake Snell will also opt out in favor of free agency.
This means that there will be four deletions from the 40-man roster and those spots will be filled immediately by Winn, Murphy, Flores, and Lee. The Giants could also create space by outrighting someone like Donovan Walton from the 40-man roster.
The 40-man roster at the beginning of the offseason is just a starting point. It should look quite a bit different by the end of the offseason. This is due to free agent signings, trades, waiver claims, and protecting eligible prospects from the Rule 5 draft.
