The pressure is on for Georgia football as the season is coming to an end. At 9-2, they haven’t quite clinched their spot in the College Football Playoff yet, but they are very close.

UGA has two games remaining and there’s a chance they need to win both to make the College Football Playoff this season. Yes Georgia would make the CFP as long as they win the SEC Championship game next week, but if they lose to Georgia Tech on Friday then the only way they get into the CFP would be by winning the title game. So it’s critical that Georgia beats Georgia Tech so there’s less pressure on the championship game next weekend.

But with how the CFP committee has handled their business this year, who knows what they will decide to do if Georgia doesn’t win the SEC.

Former Alabama coach Nick Saban however is very confident that Georgia will make the playoffs this season, even if they end the year with three losses.

“You got some other teams that maybe, they didn’t play the same competition, but they didn’t lose games to average teams either,” Saban said via On3.com. “So I think that matters. And the only team that could have an argument to get in with three losses, if Georgia actually plays in the SEC championship game, they really shouldn’t be penalized. If they would happen to lose the game, they would end up with three losses.”

Georgia shouldn’t be punished for playing in the SEC Championship game

Saban shares a similar sentiment that many throughout the country feel, being that UGA shouldn’t be punished for playing in the SEC Championship game. Assuming Georgia beats Georgia Tech this weekend, Saban thinks the result of the SEC Championship game shouldn’t impact if they make the CFP or not.

For example, teams like Tennessee will have their spot in the CFP clinched as if they win their season finale. Georgia’s resume would also be equal to if not better than a team like Tennessee after this week’s games as well. So why should Georgia fall behind a team like Tennessee if they lose the SEC Championship game?
