After his surprise move during the AFL trade period, Collingwood premiership winner Jack Ginnivan had his first day at Hawthorn. He believes it’s a dream come true to “finally don the brown and gold.”
Ginnivan was a childhood Hawks fan, therefore the AFL community was shocked to learn that he was asking to be traded to the Hawks just two weeks after winning a premiership with the Magpies.
But the 20-year-old small forward declared he couldn‘t be happier after meeting some of his childhood heroes including coach Sam Mitchell and putting on the jersey for the first time as a player.
“It’s a dream come true to don the brown and gold finally. I used to barrack for them obviously,” Ginnivan said.
“One of my favourite players was Sam (Mitchell), growing up watching him, having his number on my back, they are things you dream of as a little kid and for this to happen is so special.”
Ginnivan also said he “copied” the goal-kicking routine of veteran Hawks forward Luke Breust who he will now get to play alongside.
“It’s going to be pretty cool, Luke Breust is one of my idols … I always wanted to play like him an I coped his goal kicking routine and things like that. ,” he said.
“It will be good to stand next to him.”
Ginnivan said it had been a “crazy” few days after deciding to leave his premiership teammates behind but was lured to the Hawks by his childhood links, and the excitement of the team he thinks they can be.
