After signing James Robinson in October, the Green Bay Packers had him on their practice squad. The crucial word is “had,” as the Packers released him this afternoon, according to Tom Pelissero. Robinson, who is only 25 years old, has yet to play a single snap in the 2023 regular season.
As a rookie, James Robinson ran for 1,070 yards, had another 49 catches for 344 yards receiving, and ended 2020 with 10 total touchdowns. His touches dwindled in 2021, not helped by an Achilles tear that season, and the Jaguars traded him in 2022 after Travis Etienne emerged as the clear feature back. Robinson only saw the field in four games as a New York Jet last year.
During the offseason, the Jets released Robinson. The Patriots and Giants both gave him a shot but moved on before the regular season began. Then, the Green Bay Packers signed him to the practice squad in October. Now, they’re letting Robinson go too.
Why Did the Green Bay Packers Make the Move?
There are a few reasons why the Green Bay Packers chose to cut Robinson now. One is that rookie Emanuel Wilson had his best day on the ground, highlighted by a 31-yard run. Green Bay only keeps three running backs active, so if he’s gaining trust there’s no room for James Robinson on the team.
The Packers’ secondary is also thin right now. Rudy Ford, who suffered an injury just before Sunday’s game, was recently placed on injured reserve, while Rasul Douglas was traded away. Last week, Green Bay tried out four safety for the practice squad, so don’t be surprised if they fill Robinson’s old position with a defensive back.
