The Texas A&M Aggies are seeking for a new coach after firing Jimbo Fisher in the middle of his sixth season with the program on Sunday morning. Lane Kiffin, the coach of the Ole Miss Rebels, rose to prominence as soon as the news surfaced.
Herm Edwards, a former college football and NFL head coach, is one of several media figures that believes Kiffin will prosper with the Aggies, as he stated during an ESPN broadcast on Monday afternoon.
“Well he’s been in that conference, he understands how to deal with the people there right? He’s good, he’s brash, he’s confident, he brings in an offense that can score points,” Edwards said, via On3 Sports. “It’s just a matter of now the ability to recruit players and guess what, now you can recruit them because you have this new system of recruiting, it’s called you can actually pay the players.”
Edwards believes recruitment would not be a problem at Texas A&M for Kiffin, thanks in large part to the blank checkbook that comes with the Aggies’ position. Edwards clearly has not brushed up on his knowledge surrounding NIL collectives, as the Rebels are no slouches when it comes to modern-day college athletics.
Ole Miss’ NIL fund, The Grove Collective, was named one of the Top 10 most ambitious NIL collectives in college football this summer, while Texas A&M has run into a few hiccups with its fund.
The Aggies’ controversial 12th Man Fund was shut down in August after the program reviewed directives from the IRS. The fund has since rebranded into Texas Aggies United, but you don’t see the IRS knocking on Ole Miss’ door.
Regardless, Kiffin was asked if he was a likely candidate for the Texas A&M position on Sunday and responded in a somewhat cryptic manner.
“I’m not going there again,” Kiffin said on Sunday.
Time will tell whether we receive a more concrete response from Kiffin, but the Rebels are determined to finish the season with at least 10 wins. Ole Miss will play the ULM Warhawks on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT, and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
