The Green Bay Packers’ defense struggled against New York Giants third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito. While no game in the NFL is guaranteed, many expected the Packers to be in complete control all night based on their performance over the previous three weeks. That was certainly not the case. All afternoon, the defense allowed Tommy DiVito to move the ball up and down the field (particularly via quarterback runs).

The performance allowed the Giants to score 24 points, including the game winning drive that led to a field goal with no time remaining.  With Joe Barry’s seat hotter than ever, these are the top five replacements Green Bay could target.

Premier Candidate Emerges As Candidate To Replace Green Bay Packers Defensive Coordinator Joe Barry

Ejiro Evero – Carolina Panthers

As defensive coordinator in 2022, Evero led the Broncos to a top-10 ranking in total defense (320 yards per game, seventh) and third in net yards per passing attempt (5.6 – tied with Kansas City). During this season, he coached cornerback Patrick Surtain II to the Pro Bowl.

Evero was a safeties and secondary coach with the Rams for five years before joining the Broncos. He oversaw the safeties from 2017-20 before serving as defensive passing game coordinator and secondary coach for Los Angeles’ 2021 Super Bowl run. In 2021, the Rams tied for third in interceptions (19) and had 10 players intercept a pass.

In 2016, Evero actually worked for the Packers as a defensive quality control coach. During his time in Green Bay, Evero worked under Dom Capers. Evero was part of the staff that led the Packers to a 10-6 record that season.

Evero was appointed as defensive coordinator by the Carolina Panthers on February 5, 2023, under the direction of head coach Frank Reich. However, considering the Panthers’ 1-12 start, many changes are likely inside the organization. Evero has been linked to the Packers numerous times in the past, and the Packers should make a statement on the defensive coaching side of the ball this offseason. That type of move would be appropriate for Evero.
