The United States and city of New Orleans was struck with tragic news on Wednesday morning when reports emerged that dozens of people were injured and several fatalities were confirmed after a truck drove into a crowd celebrating New Year’s on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Details are still unfolding as authorities continue to investigate the situation. However, this horrific incident occurred less than 24 hours before the scheduled Sugar Bowl matchup between the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs, set to take place at the Caesars Superdome, just a short distance from the scene of the tragedy. The game was initially slated for 8:45 p.m. EST on Wednesday night.
In response, Louisiana Senator John Kennedy, along with other government and Sugar Bowl officials involved in the ongoing investigation, announced that the game would be postponed for 24 hours. It will now be played on Thursday night.
In the wake of the heartbreaking events, SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, whose conference is represented by Georgia in what was a highly anticipated matchup, released a statement addressing the situation.
“New Orleans is a special community that is hurting as we begin the New Year. Today’s tragedy in the French Quarter is a sobering event that reminds us that life is precious and each day is to be cherished.” Sankey said.
“Our prayers are with the families and everyone associated with those impacted by this senseless act of violence. We are grateful for those serving in law enforcement and public safety who responded immediately and continue to work for the safety of the community.”
Greg Sankey later commented on the decision to postpone the game:
“The decision to postpone tonight’s Sugar Bowl was made in the best interest of public safety.”
“Lives were tragically lost last night and we are appreciative that public officials and law enforcement agencies continue to work with great diligence to ensure the safety of the New Orleans community.” Sankey said.
What was expected to be an exciting day filled with thrilling college football games quickly turned into one of concern and sadness following the senseless acts in Louisiana.
As the investigation continues, players, coaches, and staff members have been instructed to remain in their hotels while authorities work to ensure the safety of the stadium and surrounding streets.
The focus is on uncovering more details about why such a horrific act was carried out against innocent people simply trying to enjoy a holiday celebration.
