An Atlanta Braves fan died Saturday night after falling from the stands at a Yankees-Braves game.
Gregory Murrey, 60, fell from Turner Field’s upper deck during the seventh inning. According to game observers, Murrey appeared to lose his feet while heckling Alex Rodriguez.
Officials first reported that the individual was in “grave” condition. He was pronounced deceased at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The Braves issued a brief statement following the game, announcing the fan’s death and extending their heartfelt condolences:
“We have got confirmation that a fan engaged in an accident during this evening’s game has died. The Atlanta Braves send their heartfelt sympathies to the family.
Many fans at the game were terrified by the fall, and others shared their disbelief on social media.
However, many criticized the Braves for not pausing the game when medical workers rushed to rescue Murrey. According to fans, the Braves began their seventh-inning stretch shortly after he fell.
Murray’s family sent a statement to CNN, saying, “Greg was a season ticket holder in the same seats for 23 years. Greg was watching the Braves the night he died, which was one of his favorite pastimes. At this time, the family requests that you respect their privacy as they mourn the loss of such an amazingly beautiful man.”
The fall is still being studied, and it is unknown whether alcohol played a role in it. Turner Field has seen its second death in three years.
