Four children and two adults were killed, while a seventh person was injured, according to Ottawa police. The incident was carried out by a “lone actor” in an Ottawa suburb on Wednesday night.

Police Chief Eric Stubbs told CBC News in an interview that there was a “mass shooting,” but an Ottawa police spokesperson would not confirm the weapon.

Police were called to a Barrhaven condo just before 11 p.m. Wednesday and discovered the corpses in what Stubbs describes as “a horrific scene.”

One individual was apprehended immediately after police arrived, and Stubbs claims there is no current threat to public safety.

He said police are still investigating the suspect’s relationship with the victims, but it does not appear to be a case of domestic violence.

A seventh victim was sent to the hospital with critical but non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither of the victims has been identified.

“A mass shooting like this, with this amount of victims, is not a common occurrence in this community,” Stubbs told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). “It is a safe community.”
