Tony Mitchell, an Alabama sophomore defensive back, has entered the NCAA transfer portal, sources told 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer on Tuesday.

Mitchell was not seen wearing an Alabama uniform for the April 13 A-Day game. He had been seen in uniform at practice the previous Tuesday, the last time media were allowed to observe practice before to the spring game.

Mitchell, a four-star prospect in the 2023 class from Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) High School, was ranked No. 195 nationwide by 247 Sports. He played in seven games last season, largely on special teams. His role in Alabama’s new defense was unclear, and he was not among the second-team safety group in practices observed by reporters this spring.

Mitchell was caught in March 2023 by police in Florida for marijuana possession following a traffic stop in which he escaped police at speeds above 140 mph. Mitchell was suspended by then-coach Nick Saban shortly after his arrest. Mitchell pleaded no guilty to his legal charges and was sentenced to probation and community service. Saban reinstated Mitchell last summer.

Mitchell becomes Alabama’s fourth scholarship transfer portal exit this spring. The transfer portal ends for undergraduate players on Tuesday night and graduate players on Wednesday night.

Mitchell’s entry into the gate comes a day after Charlotte safety Kameron Howard committed to Alabama via the transfer portal, and hours after, freshman safety Peyton Woodyard did the same.
