While the NFL draft offered the Cincinnati Bengals with some fresh weapons on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, it can be argued that this has been a difficult offseason in Southwest Ohio. While they elected to bring in a big list of temporary contracts, they have lost some key players throughout the field, making challenging for the AFC North title much more difficult this season.
Cincinnati Bengals Make Critical Offseason Mistake
Until earlier today, Cincinnati fans had hoped that great slot receiver Tyler Boyd would return to the team next season. It may have felt like a long shot, but after his free agency market appeared to vanish in front of his eyes, it seemed logical that the team would reach out in an attempt to keep their dependable interior receiver.
That dream was dashed when Boyd was signed by the Tennessee Titans on Tuesday for a meager $4.5 million for one season. This was a good signing for first-year head coach Brian Callahan, as Boyd will join former Texans superstar DeAndre Hopkins and former Jaguars standout Calvin Ridley in a formidable wide receiver combination. The trade is a great steal for Callahan, as Boyd is still regarded as one of the top slot receivers in the NFL.
While Tennessee has won handily, the orange-and-black stripes are left scratching their heads. Boyd has become a fan favorite in Cincinnati since being picked alongside famous receiver A.J. Green in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. While he has dropped down the depth chart following the acquisition of skilled wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase, Boyd remains a solid starting wideout with elite ball-catching skills.
