When questioned about Philippe Clement during pre-game responsibilities, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers expertly avoided talking about the new Rangers manager’s appointment.

After a dismal start to the season under failed Manager Michael Beale, Clement has been handed a long-term contract to turn around the Ibrox side’s fortunes.

Naturally, the media tried to get Rodgers’ take on it this week, but he made it clear that not only is he entirely focused on Celtic but that he’s seen it all before with a conveyor belt of other Rangers managers.

Brendan Rodgers not focusing on Rangers

Rodgers said [Daily Record, 21/10 print edition]: “I never worry about anything outside. My focus is layered towards our club, our performances and our results. That’s all I focus on.

“Of course, I’m aware [of Clement] and I don’t know the new manager, but I’ve had it before with a number of Rangers managers, it’s still the same. We don’t play [Rangers] until later.”

The Bhoys don’t host the Ibrox side until December 30th, so there is little point discussing them too much now or providing soundbites that could be twisted. Celtic are very experienced at playing the media game, no-one is going to say anything silly about their situation.

Meanwhile, Rodgers is looking forward to a tricky schedule of games, starting with a trip to Tynecastle to face Hearts on Sunday.

He continued: “After this break, you look at the fixtures and the close proximity and it’s quite tight. But it’s exciting. It’s one of the great stadiums. There’s a very good atmosphere and there’s a good rivalry between Celtic and Hearts.”

That lot across the city may well benefit from the fabled “new manager bounce,” but if Rodgers can keep Celtic winning and keeping things consistent, they’ll continue to be at arm’s length regardless. This is a crucial time of the season for Celtic. The Bhoys can’t give our rivals an inch, and it’s important to at least consolidate the seven-point lead held until the next international break.
