The Reds player was fantastic in 2021–2022, and Forest advanced. He made a big impression in the Premier League last season and seemed to get better every time out.

McKenna signed for Forest in 2020 from Aberdeen. He eventually cost the Reds £6 million and he’s been a very decent servant to the football club since he signed.

McKenna could now leave Forest

According to The Telegraph, there has been a contract dispute with McKenna this summer. It appears that the parties have been unable to agree on an extension and he is likely to leave now.

As a result of that, Forest have a decision to make on McKenna. If they leave it until the summer, they won’t recoup a fee for his services and that would be pretty poor business.

However, overseas clubs will be able to enter negotiations over a pre-contract agreement during the January transfer window. That could leave Forest powerless should there be interest.

Forest must resolve this matter quickly

Ultimately, Forest do have better options than McKenna at the moment. He’s not been getting into the squad lately and his days at Forest were seemingly numbered anyway.

Still, it’s a shame that things look set to end over a contract dispute. McKenna deserves better than that from Forest and he’s been an exceptional servant to the club over the last three years.

Forest have done some great work on and off the pitch in recent years. However, this whole episode shows that they still have to do more in certain areas.

Forest should have done more for McKenna. Given how well he performed during the promotion season, he ought to have had his contract extended even though he is no longer a fixture in the first team.
