Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is already the subject of new NFL speculations, but those in the league are growing increasingly sure that this is the year he returns to their ranks.

Harbaugh’s name has been floating around the league, and many believe “this might be the year” he returns, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. A potential penalty stemming from the Michigan sign-stealing controversy remains a possibility, especially if the Wolverines win the national championship.

Fowler adds that Harbaugh may want power over personnel if he does leave for the NFL. He could, however, have a key advantage, as any teams with a coaching vacancy can talk to him immediately. Coaching candidates employed in the NFL cannot be spoken to until after the divisional round of the playoffs.

Every year, Harbaugh is linked to the NFL, but there could be something more to these speculations this time. Whatever the outcome of Michigan’s season, tumultuous times may lie ahead. NFL organizations do not appear to be concerned about the charges at the collegiate level, leaving the route for Harbaugh to return if he so desires.
