LATEST UPDATE: The identity of the Chargers’ likely backup head coach is revealed by…

When the Los Angeles Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh, they finally demonstrated that they are willing to shell out a lot of money for a head coach—and it appears that they were ready to do so even if their first choice declined.

On “The Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter stated that he thinks Mike Vrabel would have been the Chargers’ backup pick if they hadn’t selected Harbaugh.

Schefter stated, “I think that (Vrabel) would have been the guy in L.A. if Harbaugh hadn’t gotten the job there.” “I believe Vrabel would have been the next player the Chargers looked to who would have won that job if Harbaugh had boarded the plane to go to Atlanta.”

After being let go by the Tennessee Titans, Vrabel was anticipated to be a highly sought-after candidate for head coach, but it looks like he won’t be considered for this cycle of hiring. Despite multiple interviews, the 48-year-old has not received a job offer. There are still head coach openings with the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, but if either team had desired Vrabel, they most likely would have hired him by now.

Vrabel guided the Titans to three straight postseason appearances and a 54-45 record in his six seasons with the franchise. If he doesn’t be hired as an NFL head coach anytime soon, that would be shocking.
