Jonathan India, an infielder for the Cincinnati Reds, is out for several weeks due to a re-aggravated foot issue.

According to Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer:

According to David Bell, Jonathan India (foot) will not play in spring games until about March 7 or 8. He cannot reinjure the injury. However, they are gradually resuming the development under supervised conditions. He’ll be conducting work similar to live BPs where they can control the base running.

India has already dealt with plantar fasciitis, so this appears to be a recurrence of the issue.

India’s 27-year-old earned the Rookie of the Year award in 2021, but has not been as successful in subsequent years. In 2021, he hit.269 with 21 home runs and had an on-base percentage of.376. In 2022, he played only 103 games, hitting.249 with 10 home runs. In 2023, he played 119 games, hitting.244 with an on-base percentage of.338. He had seventeen home runs.

Given the Reds’ abundance of infielders, he will likely play more of a utility role this season. The squad already has Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Spencer Steer, and Jeimer Candelario, so India may play first base or left field in addition to his usual second base position.

Because of all the young talent on the position player side, the Reds will be a popular bet to make the playoffs this season. Cincinnati hasn’t made the playoffs since the COVID-shortened 2020 season, when they were eliminated by the Atlanta Braves.
